In 1928 Yaroslav Nikolaev graduated from East-Siberian Art School in Irkutsk, pupil of Ivan Kopilov.

Member of the Leningrad Union of Artists since 1932.
A Head of Leningrad Chapter of the Russian Artists Union (1948-1951).
Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation (1956).
People's Artist of the Russian Federation (1975).
